Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in a magical realm of elemental magic and martial arts. It follows the mystical adventures of Aang, a 12 year old boy who is the present incarnation of the Avatar, and his friends Katara, Sokka, Toph, and their 2 animal companions Momo and Appa. As the Avatar, Aang is charged with mastering all 4 elements (Earth, Sea, Wind and Fire) to bring peace to the land. Aang's quest leads him and his friends in a battle to save the world from the evil Fire Nation, and much of the show centers on avoiding capture from Prince Zuko and other enforcers from the Fire Nation.
Avatar: The Last Airbender is a constant ratings performer in the Nicktoons stable, even outside its main demographic of 6-11 year olds. Praise has stemmed from the depth of the character development. Only 2 major characters can be considered one dimensional - the Fire Lord and Azula who is seen as completely evil. There are many major characters - Aang, Katara, Sokka,Toph,Prince Zuko,Uncle Iroh and Princess Azula with even more secondary characters, so to have character development across them all is a considerable achievement.
Avatar: The Last Airbender has been such a success that Nickelodeon has completed 2 seasons and has commissioned a third. It has had many merchandise spinoffs, including DVDs, videos, action figures, lego sets and a video game which is currently in development.
